Am I at an increased risk of osteoporosis due to my Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) diagnosis?

People with IBD have a higher risk of osteoporosis, a condition characterized by low bone density. This risk of a decrease in bone density can occur due to use of corticosteroids, chronic inflammation, or vitamin D deficiency (which is common in those with IBD). When you speak with your Care Team, be sure to discuss  what steps you can take to prevent osteoporosis, especially if you have family history or other risk factors such as low BMI.
