Narcotics (also known as opiod medications) are best used to treat acute pain, such as after a surgery or during an Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) complication such as obstruction. Narcotics should not be used to manage chronic IBD pain as they have serious side effects such as dependence, nausea, vomiting, constipation, or narcotic bowel syndrome.
