Will I need surgery if I have Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)?

Even with medicines and lifestyle changes, you may need surgery to treat your Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). For Crohn\’s, surgery may be needed to treat fistulas, life-threatening bleeding, obstructions, or other symptoms that don\’t improve with medication. For ulcerative colitis (UC), surgery may be needed to treat colorectal cancer; precancerous cells that increase the risk for developing colorectal cancer; or life-threatening complications such as severe rectal bleeding, toxic megacolon, or perforation of the large intestine.
